This project was completed during my summer internship at 'The Matchbox Girl,' a creative studio based in Mumbai. The task was to illustrate a children's picture book, offering a humorous yet heartwarming portrayal of cats fitting into small spaces, as if they were liquid—especially in the hearts of their pet parents.
Is my cat liquid?
I find him in the most odd places,
Curled up in his bowl of food,
sleeping nooks, crannies & other tight spaces.
He calms my heart and lifts my mood.
Maybe he thinks he’s liquid
Stalking birds from the window sill,
Suddenly he lets out a loud hiss,
Away from my hugs & snuggles he flees,
Through tiny gaps with his heart so free,
I look everywhere for my sneaky little monster,
And cannot believe when I find him in the dishwasher.
My Cat is liquid
That much I know
As tough a missing piece,
He is the one that fits Perfectly.
The style of 'The Matchbox Girl' is richly textured and fluid, creatively engaging with the space in each project. We aimed to adopt a similar approach for this project as well.
The illustrations were treated by creating physical textures with paper, paints, and oil pastels, which were then scanned and applied as clipping masks onto the artwork.
And cannot believe when I find him in the dishwasher.
I look everywhere for my sneaky little monster.
